Wearing orthodontic braces may be the best choice for correcting your teeth and improving your smiles. That’s why all of our patients have chosen to see Dr Ashish Gupta for their orthodontic needs.
Braces, work gently applying pressure to the teeth and that pressure causes them to move into the correct position. For some cases, elastics or rubber bands, are used to apply additional pressure needed to move your teeth.
The purpose of Elastics:
Every patient is different, the rubber bands typically stretch over tiny loops on the top and bottom brackets. If worn everyday, and consistently these tiny elastics will help apply steady pressure needed to guide your teeth into the correct position.
The elastics are crafted from medical grade latex., which is safe to be in contact with our patients mouths. You are able to remove plastics from the mouth during eating if it is difficult to open mouth wide enough with the elastics in.
The Do’s and The Dont’s
DO- Get in the habit of carrying around extra rubber bands and replace the as soon as one breaks. The better you are with consistently wearing the elastics, you will help shorten the overall time needed to wear braces.
DON’T- Double up on elastics as this will causes too much pressure on the tooth or teeth and can actually harm the root of the tooth.
DO- Its important to always wash your hand before removing or replacing the rubber bands.
DON’T- Overstretch the rubber bands , or it will lose its strength and it will be ineffective.
Rubber bands are a key part of orthodontic treatment. Learning how to remove and replace them is an important part to maintaining your braces. It is VERY VERY important to follow your orthodontist instructions on when and how to wear rubber bands. If you fail to wear them as directed it can prolong your orthodontic treatment. If you have any questions or concerns with how you should wear your rubber bands, don’t hesitate to call our office!
